Style Intro 101

Hello everyone!

My name is Emily, and I am the stylist for Fifth District Media. As a Wardrobe Stylist I get a lot of questions about what I do. And, in some cases it is pretty self explanitory, I dress people. In particular I mostly dress models for photoshoots. I got primarily into styling because I have always been interested in fashion. Ever since I was a little girl I would spend hours watching shows like Project Runway disecting outfits. I would collect Vogue in my room and flip through the pages at night when I was supposed to be sleeping.

I never knew such a passion could become a career. Because, honestly if you think about it, it is not a typical or normal career path. I went to college for Business Administration thinking that I would just find a job after that would just make me feel content. I started spending more time around others in the creative field who encouraged me to pursue the path. And, one day without even really thinking about it I called myself a Wardrobe Stylist.

Essentially, this career is a bit odd. And, what I mean by that there is no easy path or someone to guide you a long the way in your journey. Style is a personal choice, but it is also creative vision. I like to believe fashion is a bit of a enigma. And, I believe that because I may find a dress beautiful while someone else finds it hideous. It's all about perspective.

With photoshoots it is all about the character or type of person you are trying to potray to the world. For me, to make it easier I really like to imagine who this person is and how do I reflect that with clothing. I find that I have a good personal skill that I can close my eyes after I look at a person and envision them in different outfits. I feel that I am good at predicting upcoming trends in fashion, and showing my own flair while staying on trend. But, that does not mean that I do not spend time studying. I spend hours watching the fashion shows and looking at the designer collections. I study the latest advertisements that said designers release for their brands. And, I look at the latest fashion editorials every month in magazines.

I think I am going to wrap this up here. But, I am going to leave you with this thought:

Just be true to yourself, and listen to as much as one is able to other peoples opinions that you respect and look up too, but in the end it has to come from you. You can’t really worry too much by looking to the left and the right about what the competition is doing or what other people in your field are doing. It has to be a true vision.
